Superintendent Glenn Offers Helpful Safety Tips for School Arrivals and Dismissals

Greenwood School District 50 is having another successful school year thanks to the hard work and dedication of our teachers, students, and staff. This is an important reminder to parents about driving and parking lot safety on our school campuses and in our school zones. Please remember that schools are often very busy during arrival and dismissal times with students walking to and from vehicles. Drivers should always exercise extreme caution when entering or exiting school campuses and when driving in school parking lots.

It is imperative that arrival and dismissal expectations are followed on a daily basis to keep everyone safe.

The following are daily driver safety tips that can help with safe arrival and dismissal at all of our schools:

    • Follow instructions and directions. Always follow the instructions and directions provided by school personnel. Stay in designated pick up areas as directed.
    • Stay alert and be cautious. Pay attention to others while driving. Remember to yield to pedestrians, crossing guards, buses and other vehicles who have the right-of-way. Be aware that children who are walking to and from school may not look both ways before venturing in or across a roadway.
    • Obey road signs and rules. Pay attention to road signs (stop signs, illegal turn signs, yield signs, etc.). Be sure to drive the proper direction through parking lots and nearby streets.
    • Pay attention to the speed limit. The speed limit on school grounds is to be kept at or below 10 mph. The school zone speed limit is posted on speed limit signs. Drivers must operate their vehicles with due care and caution at all times.
    • Do not pass. Do not pass or attempt to pass other vehicles that are waiting to turn into or out of the school.

Most importantly parents should be patient, respectful, and courteous to other drivers.  Anger and frustration can lead to careless and unsafe behavior on our school campuses.

As always, thank you for your continued support in keeping all of our students and staff safe.

Sincerely,
