Johnnie Tolbert Recognized as District Support Employee of the Year

l On August 26th, Johnnie Tolbert was recognized as District 50’s Support Employee of the Year at a Board of Trustees meeting held at Emerald.

Tolbert is currently working as a custodian at Brewer Middle School. Tolbert has worked in District 50 for the last 14 years. Prior to working in District 50, Tolbert worked at Greenwood Mills for 37 years.

“I’m very honored to be working in the school district,” Tolbert stated. “I worked several years in the mill, but wish I would have spent most of that time working in the schools. I talk with a lot of our children in school and try to encourage them to get their education because once they have it, no one can take it away from them.”

During the Board meeting, Tolbert received a standing ovation and round of applause from everyone in attendance after receiving his award.

“Mr. Tolbert is one of the most kind-hearted and gentle spirited person I have ever met,” Brewer Principal Kathryn Benjamin stated. “He takes the time to get to know our students and encourages them when they are having good or bad days. Students and staff respect and listen to him every day.”

“It was exciting to see one of our dedicated support employees receive such a tremendous honor,” Superintendent Steve Glenn said. “Mr. Tolbert is an exceptional employee and even better person. Over the last 14 years, he has routinely gone above and beyond the call of duty. District 50 is blessed to have him as a support employee and role model for our students and staff!”
