• History

Mathews Elementary School was built in 1951. The Self Family donated the land for the school to be built for its employees of Self Mills.  Mr. Shuler was the first principal of Mathews School.  The school had 1st through 6th grades.  Built during the time of segregation, Mathews started as an all white school.  During the mid 1960's Mathews integrated, or allowed all children regardless of race to attend school.  A kindergarten wing was added on to the school in the early 1970's.  In the late 1980's, a new library and office area were added on to the school.  The main part of the school still remains as it did in 1951, currently being used as the maintenance department for GWD 50. In 2009, Mathews Elemantary was relocated to its brand new building, 725 Marshall Road.
