FOREIGN LANGUAGE CURRICULUM

French 1

Prerequisites: Recommended - "C" or better in previous Language Arts or English

1 Unit

French 1 is designed to help students attain proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing within a minimum period of time and in a way that makes language-learning seem effortless and fun, and to present the language within the context of the contemporary French-speaking world and its culture.  Special emphasis is placed on involving students in the learning of a foreign language as relevant to their own lives and subculture.  The majority of the activities in this program have youth-related themes:  hobbies, travel, school work, dating, choice of career, relationships with parents, and attitudes toward love, friendship, money, success, and failure.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE CURRICULUM

French 2

Prerequisites: Recommended - "C" or better in French 1

1 Unit

French 2, like French 1, strives for student proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing within a minimum period of time.  The guiding principle has been the development of a program that elicits a high level of student participation in the learning process.  Time will be spent strengthening the common foundation along with continuing new vocabulary and structures.  Cultural material is integrated into learning so that students acquire an awareness of the French-speaking world as they read, study structures, and complete the activities.  Students are exposed to the geographic, ethnic, and cultural variety of the French-speaking world from Canada to the Caribbean, from Tahiti to Switzerland.  From the use of youth-related themes, a new awareness and a new dimension in studies are stimulated while learning French.  In this course, French is used almost exclusively.
