361100CW FOREIGN LANGUAGE CURRICULUM French 1 Prerequisites: Recommended - "C" or better in previous Language Arts or English 1 Unit French 1 is designed to help students attain proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing within a minimum period of time and in a way that makes language-learning seem effortless and fun, and to present the language within the context of the contemporary French-speaking world and its culture. Special emphasis is placed on involving students in the learning of a foreign language as relevant to their own lives and subculture. The majority of the activities in this program have youth-related themes: hobbies, travel, school work, dating, choice of career, relationships with parents, and attitudes toward love, friendship, money, success, and failure. 361200CW FOREIGN LANGUAGE CURRICULUM French 2 Prerequisites: Recommended - "C" or better in French 1 1 Unit French 2, like French 1, strives for student
proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing within a minimum
period of time. The guiding principle
has been the development of a program that elicits a high level of student
participation in the learning process.
Time will be spent strengthening the common foundation along with
continuing new vocabulary and structures.
Cultural material is integrated into learning so that students acquire
an awareness of the French-speaking world as they read, study structures, and
complete the activities. Students are
exposed to the geographic, ethnic, and cultural variety of the
French-speaking world from 361300CW FOREIGN LANGUAGE CURRICULUM French 3 Prerequisites: Recommended - "C" or better in French 2 1 Unit French 3 is an advanced course that cements the previous two years of French study. It takes the basic elements of levels 1 and 2 and combines them to produce a more proficient language production. Oral language is stressed more than in previous classes through the inclusion of native language videos. Beyond advanced grammar concepts, students will have an additional reading assignment from supplemental texts. This course is designed to be an introduction to the AP language curriculum. 361400HW FOREIGN LANGUAGE CURRICULUM French 4/Honors Prerequisites: French 3 1 Unit French 4/Honors is designed to expand the students' understanding of the French language and its culture and to enhance the four basic skills in the target language - listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Major emphasis will be placed on advanced grammar and composition. This course will include a basic review of all structures and skills emphasized in French 3. 369901HW FOREIGN LANGUAGE CURRICULUM French 5/Honors - Advanced Grammar and Composition Prerequisites: French 4/Honors 1 Unit French 5/Honors is designed to provide the student with
an extensive study of spoken French and to practice listening comprehension
and reading skills. Students will be
required to speak only French in class.
367100AW FOREIGN LANGUAGE CURRICULUM French /AP Prerequisites: French 5/Honors 1 Unit French /AP is designed to provide a sound basis of linguistic competence especially in the areas of vocabulary development, grammar proficiency, and reading and listening skills. Within the context of various listening activities, students should be able to understand French intonation patterns and complex structures. Speaking skills will be emphasized, preparing the student to speak accurately and spontaneously. Students will also practice writing precisely, convincingly, and correctly on topics of general interest. The Advanced Placement Examination is a requirement of this course. 365100CW FOREIGN LANGUAGE CURRICULUM Spanish 1 Prerequisites: Recommended - "C" or better in previous Language Arts or English 1 Unit Spanish 1 is designed to help students attain an acceptable degree of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing within the context of the contemporary Spanish-speaking world and its culture. Included will be brief studies of the geography and people of many of the Spanish-speaking countries. 365200CW FOREIGN LANGUAGE CURRICULUM Spanish 2 Prerequisites: Recommended - "C" or better in Spanish 1 1 Unit Spanish 2 reviews and reinforces the four basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Its aim is to give students an active, flexible command of Spanish through personal involvement and understanding rather than through set sequences and rote memorization.
