WHERE EXTRAORDINARY CAREERS BEGIN

The goal of the Greenwood County Career Center is to prepare students for careers. Students will learn skills which qualify them for entry level employment or allows them to continue their education at technical colleges and/or other colleges and universities.

 

The Greenwood County Career Center offers courses under the following clusters: Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources; Architecture & Construction; Business, Management, Administration/Finance; Education & Training; Health Science; Human Services; Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics; Manufacturing; Marketing, Sales & Service; Transportation, Distribution & Logistics; and a Work Transition Program which serves special needs students. Most programs offer the opportunity to earn at least six hours of dual credit per year. All programs have a fee. The instructor will notify students of the cost at the beginning of school.

 

Students attending the Career Center have the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational and extracurricular activities including: job shadowing, cooperative education, mentoring, service-learning projects, program clubs, student representatives, honor society, teambuilding endeavors, and character education.

 

Transportation is provided to and from the Career Center from each feeder high school. Students obtaining appropriate permission may drive personal vehicles to the Center.

 

The Greenwood County Career Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Students and parents are invited to call (864-941-5750) or visit the Center for further information.

 

HIGHLIGHTS

All programs:

1. Encourage diversity regardless of gender.

2. Consist of a classroom for instruction and a laboratory for practical work.

3. Compete in district competition; winners may advance to state and national events.

4. Work closely with business and industry through Advisory Committees to ensure that the latest trends and techniques are being taught.

5. Are fully accredited with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Office of Career and Technology Education, and the State Department of Education.

6. Select an Outstanding Student each year.

7. Assist graduates with placement.

8. Provide the opportunity for eligible students to belong to the National Technical Honor Society.

9. Provide students the opportunity for academic assistance in basic skills and in program content.

 

COOPERATIVE EDUCATION

Cooperative Education is a structured program that connects school-based and work-based learning for accelerated second-year students who have shown potential in their occupational field. The work experience is planned and supervised by the school and the participating sponsor so that each contributes to the students’ education and employability. Students who work during class time earn the same number of units they would receive by being in class. Students are not guaranteed a job or pay; however, they will receive valuable work experience at an actual worksite.

 

*To be eligible to receive dual credit, a student must be in the eleventh grade or be 16 years of age.

Turf and Lawn Management/Part 1

Prerequisites:  None

1Unit

This semester class is designed to introduce students to a career in landscape/lawn maintenance.  The curriculum includes instruction and training on the safe and efficient use of power horticulture equipment.  The program combines classroom instruction with hands-on experience in equipment maintenance and the establishment, management, and maintenance of grassed areas for both ornamental and recreational purposes.  Maintenance of equipment, as well as fundamentals of small engine repair, will be taught at this level.

Turf and Lawn Management/Part 2A

Prerequisites:  Turf and Lawn Management/Part 1

2 Units - Dual Credit Available

Students who wish to be completers should advance to this level.  The training and skills learned in the introductory course will be broadened.  The class will participate in specific projects in the community and will have the opportunity to participate in job shadowing and service-learning activities.  Landscape design principles, plant identification, and pesticide certification are areas of emphasis in the curriculum at this level.

Carpentry/Part 1

Prerequisites:  None

1 Unit

Carpentry/Part 1 exposes students to the proper procedures of how to operate hand and power tools used in residential carpentry.   The students will receive lectures as well as hands-on experience in safety, hand and power tools, building materials, site layout, foundations, and blueprints.  Projects will include wood frames, doghouses, playhouses, and other small items.  Strong emphasis is placed on the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements.

Carpentry/Part 2A

Prerequisites:  Carpentry/Part 1

2 Units - Dual Credit Available

Carpentry/Part 2A provides students with training needed in the proper application of different building materials which include lumber, oriented strained board, engineered lumber, and other modern materials.  The curriculum continues to emphasize reading of sketches, blueprints, and trade mathematics within the classroom.  The students are involved in foundation layouts, including the calculations of elevations with the laser level.  The students continue practical hands-on experiences which include constructing garages, decks, and additions to homes in the community.

Prerequisites:  Carpentry/Part 2A

2 Units - Dual Credit Available

Carpentry/Part 2B provides an opportunity for students to continue practical hands-on experiences. The students study exterior and interior finishes, as well as stair construction. Those who have mastered the required competencies will have the opportunity to participate in the Cooperative Education Program.  Upon completion of Carpentry/Part 2B , the student is qualified to become a sub-contractor, carpenter, lumber retailer, roofer, or to enter postsecondary education.

Accounting 1

Prerequisites:  Passed 8th Grade PACT Math

1 Unit

Accounting 1 is a course designed for students who are competent in their mathematical skills.  It provides basic skills for young people who are interested in entering the field of accounting, computer-related jobs, and various other office positions.  It provides a good base for further study and career advancement in the business world.  Some topics covered include starting an accounting system, debit and credit of business transactions, journalizing, and posting.  It also covers the six-column worksheet, the income statement, the balance sheet, closing the ledger, posting and closing entries, and special journals.   A workbook, calculator, and other costs are required.

Accounting 2 with Computer Applications

Prerequisites:  Accounting 1 with a Grade of "C" or better

Accounting 2  with Computer Applications provides an excellent background and preparation for college business and accounting courses and other business majors.  In addition, cost, budgeting, and financial analysis topics are useful tools for future entrepreneurship.  Topics include professional accounting, departmentalized accounting, accounting control systems, general accounting adjustments, corporation accounting, management accounting, cost accounting, not-for-profit accounting, and financial analysis.  Students gain realistic exposure to the business world by working with original source documents in a business simulation.  A workbook and other costs are required.

Administrative Support Technology is designed to provide an understanding of the major responsibilities and tasks in an administrative or manager trainee position.  The objectives of the course are to develop technical skills, solve business-oriented problems, manage general office tasks, and demonstrate effective supervisory, management, and human relations skills.

Introduction to Finance

The proper use of banking services and preparation of banking records are an essential part of money management.  As students move through the course, they learn how to prepare a wide range of financial records.  This course emphasizes the development of a business vocabulary and the reinforcement of math and reading skills.  The topics which will be covered are:  financial institutions, personal and business banking services, budgeting techniques, credit reports and regulations, savings and investment strategies, insurance and risk management, and personal financial management.

Qualified students have the opportunity to participate in an internship in cooperation with a local business.  This internship will occur during the spring semester of the 12th grade and will be directly related to the financial services industry.

Business Entrepreneurship

Business Entrepreneurship provides a general overview of the American Free Enterprise System.  A study of the various forms of business ownership, internal organization and management functions, as well as financing a business will be covered.  Exploration of planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling a business as related to the entrepreneur will be the focus of the class.  Objectives from the Small Business Cadet Program will be targeted.

This course is designed as an entry level class for students who are interested in pursuing a career in the health care field.  The goal of this class is to introduce students to the study of medical/health careers.  Major areas of instruction include:  the study of a variety of health careers, legal/ethical issues, safety practices, job-seeking/job-keeping skills, teamwork, and leadership skills.  Students will also receive American Red Cross Community CPR/First Aid Certification.   An opportunity to participate in service learning projects in different areas of the health care field will be provided.

Health Science Technology/Part 1A is designed to allow the student to explore a variety of health careers and make realistic, informed, and satisfying career choices.  The program provides the core knowledge and skills needed by health care workers to include basic health care, communication, legal responsibility, ethics, safety practices, teamwork, and health maintenance practices.  Students will also receive American Red Cross Community CPR/First Aid Certification.  The curriculum competencies combine classroom and laboratory instruction with practical applications of the skills learned.  Students participate in mentoring and work-based learning opportunities through local agencies.

Health Science Technology/Part 2A prepares students to seek employment at the technician/assistant level and/or to further their education at the post-secondary level.  Building on the basic core knowledge and skills acquired in the first year, the curriculum combines classroom and laboratory instruction with work-based learning experiences at hospitals, long-term care facilities, schools, and other medical facilities.  Additionally, mentoring, service learning, and work-based learning experiences are provided.   The major classroom theory of this course is the study of age-specific care, job seeking skills, and anatomy and physiology.  Certification in American Red Cross Community CPR/First Aid will be maintained.

Medical Terminology/Pathophysiology

This course is designed to develop a working knowledge of the language of medicine.  Students acquire word-building skills by learning prefixes, suffixes, roots, and abbreviations.  By relating terms to body systems, students identify proper use of words in a medical environment.  Knowledge of medical terminology enhances the student’s ability to pursue a college education in the medical/health care field.  Students will participate in an in-depth study of human anatomy and physiology.  The major emphasis of this course will be the study of the body systems, the disease processes of the body systems, and medical terminology as related to the body systems.

Cosmetology 1A

Prerequisites:  10th Grade and Pass HSAP

This course is designed for students who are seriously interested in pursuing a career in cosmetology.  Cosmetology 1A is designed to prepare students to qualify for the licensing exam and to train students to provide professional services in the salon industry.  First-year students will receive course work and hands-on-training in professional development, salon ecology, anatomy and physiology, electricity, cosmetic chemistry, salon business, trichology, shampooing, client consultations, haircutting theory and procedures, hairstyling, wigs and hair additions, perming, chemical relaxing and curl reforming.  Cosmetology kits cost approximately $300 and should be paid to GCCC by August 1.  Based on state requirements for cosmetology hours, excellent attendance is mandatory.

The student will improve the level of knowledge and skill so that upon graduation she/he will be employable as a cosmetologist.  Students are required to take the state board and pass it to become licensed.  The fee for the state board is $170.00.  Students must also complete a minimum of 1500 hours over the two-year period (1000 in Cosmetology and 500 in Academics); therefore, excellent attendance is necessary.

Early Childhood Education/Part 1

Early Childhood Education/Part 1 is designed for students who wish to explore a career in education.  If you have a love for children, compassion, mature judgment, and a sense of humor, this class may be right for you.   Students taking this class may elect to continue their education in order to teach either preschool, elementary school, or enter a related field such as child psychology.  This program will provide knowledge of child growth and all areas of development—physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and creative.  The characteristics of quality classrooms and professional teachers are explored.  Students will develop age appropriate instructional activities throughout the curriculum.  Students will also learn about the importance of developing creativity and independence in children.  Students will learn to use creative activities as a means of helping children learn to communicate and develop their senses. The opportunity to participate in job shadowing will be provided.  TB testing is required by the end of the first nine weeks.

 

*The state of South Carolina requires a HS Diploma as a minimal requirement for daycare workers.

Early Childhood Education/Part 2A focuses on the effects of health, safety, and nutrition practices on the young child.  Certification is provided in the areas of first aid, safety, and CPR.  Students will provide quality learning experiences for children from local daycare facilities by creating lesson plans, teacher-made materials, healthy snacks, and specialized centers are they operate the GCCC Child Development Center.

Computer Repair prepares the student to assemble, maintain, test, troubleshoot, and repair computers.  A student can prepare himself or herself for the nationally recognized A+, Cisco, and/or Microsoft Certifications.  Using a blend of knowledge and practical experiences, the student will study the electronic circuitry, hardware, and software principles and applications.  Using NETtech, the Network Technology Training Program, students will study computer networking principles and applications.  (Notation:  To obtain the above listed certifications, a student must pass an exam at an authorized testing center.)

Introduction to Machine Tool Technology/Part 1 is an exploratory course for students interested in the machine shop field. Students will receive hands-on training under the supervision of an experienced machinist.  Included in the course are industrial safety, blueprint reading, precision measurement, and introduction to computerized and manual machining.  Opportunities for students include continued training at the Career Center or Piedmont Tech.  A field trip to a local machine tool related industry will be part of the course.

Machine Tool Technology/Part 2A requires good eye-hand coordination, attention to detail, math skills, and organizational skills. It is designed to teach students the basic machining skills through lab and classroom experiences.  Students will continue to learn safety, blueprint reading, precision measurement, and basic metal forming operation.  Hands-on projects will help develop these skills.

Machine Tool Technology/Part 2B  prepares students for entry level employment in a related industry.  Emphasis is placed on increasing speed and accuracy of the basic skills.   Students are challenged to higher levels of performance during the semester, including Computer Numerical Controlled programming.  Outstanding students have the opportunity to be placed in a local industry for a Cooperative Education experience.

Career Skills Certification

Prerequisites: Juniors and Seniors

This course is designed to aid students in developing job-seeking and job-keeping skills.  Some of the topics will include team building, industrial safety, measuring instruments, statistical process control (SPC) and Total Quality Transformation (TQT).  Students who successfully complete this course with 80% mastery will be guaranteed an interview with a participating industry.  Successful completion of this course may qualify students for approved internships, apprenticeships, and summer employment  with participating industries.  This course will be taught on the home high school campus.

Business/Marketing Work-Based Credit (1st Semester)

Business/Marketing Work-Based Credit is a program designed for students to receive work experience in a competency-based job.  This program will be planned and supervised by the school and the sponsoring business.  The work experience will enhance the students’ education and employability skills.

 

Business/Marketing Work-Based Credit may be taken 1st or 2nd Semester, 4th block only.  Before being accepted into the course, the student must attend a mandatory meeting prior to the beginning of each semester.

Through the study of Marketing, the student will learn how businesses function on a day-to-day basis, thus gaining a further understanding of the Free Enterprise System.  Marketing accounts for about one out of every three jobs in the United States including all the activities required to plan, develop, promote, and distribute goods and services to customers.  Interpersonal skills are also an important element of the study of Marketing.  Through a greater understanding of these skills, one’s ability to get along with supervisors, co-workers, customers, and friends is enhanced.  Designing a retail store layout is just one of the many projects students can expect to complete.

Sports and Entertainment Marketing

1 Unit

Sports and Entertainment Marketing is for students who wish to pursue careers in the various areas of the sports and entertainment industry.  This includes careers in box office, group sales, marketing, operations, development, and sports programming.  The basic functions of marketing and how those functions are applied to the sports and entertainment field will be studied.  Some examples of student projects are analyzing sports ads, marketing a sports camp, and conducting marketing research on various sports teams.

Introduction to Electronics/Part 1

Prerequisites:  None

1 Unit

This semester course is the Core Electronics Program and is designed to prepare the student to perform the task of an entry-level electronic technician.  The program prepares the student to assemble, install, operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical/electronic equipment used in residential, commercial, and industrial applications.  The content includes, but is not limited to, safe and efficient work practices, use of circuits and diagrams, soldering and assembly techniques, DC electronics, AC electronics, semiconductors, and digital circuit devices.  Electronic laboratory activities are an integral part of this program.

Electronics/Part 2A

Prerequisites:  Introduction to Electronics/Part 1, Computer Repair, or GCCC Counselor Approval

Upon completion of the Core Electronics Program, the student will progress into an advanced program.  A student can choose a concentration in Industrial, Computer, or Communication Electronics.  The student will choose their area of concentration at the beginning of their second year.

 

Industrial Electronics – This concentration prepares the student to install, maintain, test, and troubleshoot electrical/electronic systems in an industrial environment.

 

Computer Electronics – This concentration prepares the student to build, test, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair computers.  Hardware, software, cabling, and basic networking are some of the major units of study.

 

Communication Electronics – This concentration prepares the student to install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electronic communication systems.  The major units of study involve telephone, video, and data systems.

The Youth Apprentice will work in a local business/industry in the area of Electronics.  The student will be supervised by an employee of the local business/industry.  Students work three hours per school day and are paid for their work.

Engineering and Technology Careers is a popular course for independent learners in grades 9-12 who are interested in gaining a better understanding about technology career options available in the district and at technical schools or colleges.  Students will gain awareness of high-demand, high-wage career choices in the areas of engineering and technology.  Through a lab approach, students will be involved in hands-on activities that require team effort.  They will have exposure to real world applications of engineering and technology.  Skills required for jobs and postsecondary education will be reinforced.  An emphasis will be placed on the application of mathematics and on communication through reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Computer Programming (BASIC)

Prerequisites: Algebra 1, Grades 10-12

1 Unit

Computer Programming  (BASIC) is a study of programming methodology.  Students will use the Q-BASIC or VISUAL BASIC programming language.  The course will include the study of the history of computers, hardware, operating systems, information systems, the use of flowcharts, number base systems, and statements involving input, output, assignment, looping, decisions, and subroutines.  Other topics include number functions, string functions, search algorithms, data files, and sorting algorithms.  Languages other than Q-BASIC will be explored.

Prerequisites: Algebra 2 or taking Algebra 2

Computer Programming (C++) is a study of programming using the C++ language.  This course includes the study of simple data types, input/output, arithmetic operators and assignment, relational and logical operators, decision structures, loops, predefined and user-defined functions and computer graphics.  Applications will involve solving problems from algebra and geometry through writing, developing, and debugging programs.

The CISCO Networking Academy program (courses 1 and 2) will provide students with entry-level training in designing,  building, maintaining, and troubleshooting computer networks.  This program will benefit students who plan to pursue careers with computers and networking.  Special emphasis is placed on technology literacy and hands-on lab work.  All tests are on-line exams.

CISCO Networking Academy 2 is a continuation of CISCO Networking Academy 1.

 

The opportunity to earn twelve units of technical credit is available for students who complete CISCO Networking Academy 1 and 2.  Students are responsible for tuition and other costs for dual credit.

 

An industry-standard certification examination through CISCO is available for students who complete CISCO Networking Academy 1 and 2.  Students will be responsible for the cost of the examination.

Introduction to Auto Collision Repair Technology/Part 1 - "A Crash Course"

Prerequisites:  None

“A Crash Course” is a one semester, one-block course that allows students to explore the world of auto collision repair and refinishing.  Students get lots of hands-on time in the lab learning how to repair damaged body panels, spray paints and primers, detailing a vehicle, and MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding.   Through self-study and computerized modular training programs, students learn how passenger restraint systems work and modern unibody vehicles manage collision energy.      

 

Caution:  Students participating in any Auto Collision Repair Technology course must NOT have any respiratory illness.  At times students may be exposed to potentially hazardous and non-hazardous dusts, mists, vapors, and fumes produced in the laboratory area.  Students are required to wear proper personal safety protection at all times.

Auto Collision Repair Technology/Part 2A

Prerequisites:  Auto Collision Repair Technology/Part 1

2 Units - Dual Credit Available

Students use a modern computerized paint intermix system to mix single-stage base-coat/clear-coat paints.  Instruction in spray painting vehicles using gravity-fed and high volume/low pressure paint guns in a modern, down-draft, temperature-controlled paint booth is provided.   Students solve color mismatches by plotting the paint and car on a color wheel graph, diagnosing the paint tints, and then tinting the finish.  Blending finishes into adjacent panels to control color mismatch is learned.  Students learn the tasks involved in managing a modern collision repair facility and how to estimate collision damage using both manual and computerized estimating systems.

Auto Collision Repair Technology/Part 2B

Prerequisites:  Auto Collision Repair Technology/Parts 1 and 2A

2 Units - Dual Credit Available

Students learn how to replace glass, as well as how to repair plastic parts by airless welding and using two-part adhesives.  Students also learn basic metric point-to-point measuring using a steel tape and tram gauge. Installation of self-centering gauges, diagnostic structural damage, and development of repair plans for pulling and straightening modern damaged vehicles is studied.   Students learn how to diagnose and service modern vehicle electronic systems such as airbag and anti-lock brake systems.  Steering and suspension system theory and diagnostics are also taught.  Students are encouraged to participate in the Cooperative Education Program.
