Emphasis is on active participation through appropriate project work, laboratory activities, group and individual assignments, discussion, practice, and exposition. Students are expected to use scientific calculators, graphing calculators and/or computers throughout the year. Mathematics for the Technologies 1 will include instruction in the following areas: patterns, geometric figures, data, algebraic expressions, real numbers, equations, inequalities, matrices, rational and irrational numbers, variation, graphs, and polynomials. 314200TW MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM Mathematics for the Technologies II/ Applied Algebra B Prerequisites: Mathematics for the Technologies 1/ Applied Algebra A Credits: 1 Unit Mathematics for the Technologies 2/Applied Algebra B is the second course of a three-year sequential program of mathematical studies focusing on the development of the student's ability to understand and apply mathematics to solve realistic workplace problems. Mathematics for the Technologies 2/Applied Algebra B will include instruction in graphs, functions, and relations. A district end-of-course test will be given in this course. 319904CW MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM Fundamentals of Algebra 1/ Part 1 Prerequisites: None Credits: 1 Elective Unit (Not for Math Credit) Fundamentals of Algebra 1 Part 1, which is the first half of a year-long Algebra course, includes a review of arithmetic, evaluating variable expressions, operations with matrices, field properties, solving and graphing linear equations and inequalities, slope, the equation of a line, and an introduction to probability and statistics. Emphasis will be placed on developing proportional reasoning and problem-solving strategies. 411101CW MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM Applications of Algebra 1/ Part 2 Prerequisites: Fundamentals of Algebra 1/ Part 1 Credits: 1 Unit Applications of Algebra 1/Part 2 is the second half of a year-long Algebra course. It is an extension of Fundamentals of Algebra 1/Part 1. This course includes the study of systems of equations, exponents, radical expressions, polynomials, factoring techniques, solving quadratic equations, and probability and statistics. Emphasis will be placed on developing proportional reasoning, algebraic thinking, and problem-solving strategies. A district end-of-course test will be given in this course. 411100CW MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM Algebra 1 Prerequisites: Recommended - "B" or better in previous math course Credits: 1 Unit Algebra 1 is a rapidly paced course. Algebra 1 includes the study of variables, field properties, operations on matrices, slope, the equation of a line, solving and graphing linear equations and inequalities, polynomials, factoring techniques, solving quadratic equations, solving systems of linear equations, and probability and statistics. Applications will be emphasized throughout the course. A district end-of-course test will be given in this course. 314300TW MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM Mathematics for the Technologies III/ Applied Geometry Prerequisites: Mathematics for the Technologies 1 and 2 Credits: 1 Unit Mathematics for the Technologies 3/ Applied Geometry is the third course in a three-year sequential program of mathematical studies focusing on the development of the student's ability to understand and apply mathematics to solve realistic workplace problems. This course is designed for the student who plans to attend a two-year college or who plans to enter the world of work directly after graduating. The course will include instruction on points, lines, planes, angles, polygons, and circles as well as the study of right triangles and the trigonometric ratios. Students will study the properties and relationships of shapes including similarity and congruence. The course will emphasize applications and the use of problem-solving strategies. A district end-of-course test will be given in this course. 314400TW MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM Mathematics for the Technologies IV/Applied Probability and Statistics Prerequisites:Students entering this class must have completed Mathematics for the Technologies I and II or Algebra and have mastered state-standards through Algebra I. Successful completion of Mathematics for the Technologies III is also recommended. Credits: 1 Unit Mathematics for the Technologies IV is an intuitive and practical approach to solving real-world problems that deal with probability, statistics, and data analysis. Students are expected to use scientific calculators, graphing calculators, and/or computer software throughout the course. The nature of the class is a hands-on, laboratory-based course. 414100CW MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM Probability and Statistics Prerequisites: Three math units including Math for the Technologies 3 or Algebra 2. Credits: 1 Unit Probability and Statistics includes the study of methods of data collection, how to organize data, the measure of central tendency, variation, sampling theory, hypothesis testing, and making inferences from samples. Emphasis will be placed on developing skills, which apply statistical methods in the decision-making process as well as on improving problem-solving skills. 412100CW MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM Geometry Prerequisites: Grade of "C" or above in Algebra 2 or Fundamentals of Algebra 1/Part 1 and Algebra 1/Part 2 Credits: 1 Unit Geometry includes the study of points, lines, planes, angles, polygons, and circles. The properties and relationships of shapes (including similarity and congruence) are studied as well as special properties of right triangles. In addition, students will study the trigonometric ratios, coordinate geometry, and transformations. This course stresses the use of deductive reasoning as well as the ability to think spatially. Emphasis is placed on applications including perimeter, area, and volume. A district end-of-course test will be given in this course. 412100HW MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM Geometry/Honors Prerequisites: Algebra 2 with a "B" average or better Credits: 1 Unit Geometry/Honors is a rigorous course intended for students who plan to take Calculus AP. This course is rapidly paced and uses a more in-depth curriculum as compared to Geometry/CP. This course stresses deductive reasoning with an emphasis on developing the concept of formal proofs. Students will apply algebra skills in conjunction with geometric ideas and problem solving. This course includes the study of points, lines, planes, angles, polygons, similarity, congruence, geometric inequalities, coordinate geometry, right triangle trigonometry, the properties and relationships of shapes, and transformations. Assessments will include projects and performance based tests which reflect critical and reflective thinking skills. 411200CW MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM Algebra 2 Prerequisites: Algebra 1 Credits: 1 Unit Algebra 2 includes a study of the properties of the real number system, equations, functions, relations, graphs, polynomial and rational expressions, quadratic equations, inequalities, exponents, complex numbers, conic sections, matrices, and logarithms. 411200HW MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM Algebra 2/Honors Prerequisites: Algebra 1/Honors with a "B" average or better Credits: 1 Unit Algebra 2/Honors is a course designed for students who plan to take Calculus/AP. The pace and depth of this course are accelerated in comparison to Algebra 2. Algebra 2/Honors is a rigorous course with emphasis on problem solving, critical thinking, and reflective analysis. This course includes the study of functions and relations, systems of equations and inequalities, polynomial and rational expressions, exponents and radicals, quadratic equations, logarithms, conic sections, and matrices. The use of a graphing calculator is encouraged and assessments vary from performance-based tests to projects. 413103CW MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM Pre-Calculus - Advanced Algebra Prerequisites: Algebra 2 and Geometry are recommended Credits: 1 Unit Advanced Algebra includes the study of polynomial, rational, radical, exponential, and logarithmic functions, inverses, conics, analytic and transformational geometry, curve sketching, inequalities, matrices, systems of equations, and sequences and series. 413101HW MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM Pre-Calculus - Advanced Algebra/Honors Prerequisites: Algebra 2/Honors and Geometry/Honors are recommended Credits: 1 Unit Pre-Calculus - Advanced Algebra/Honors is a course designed for students who intend to take Calculus AP. This course includes the study of polynomial, rational, radical, exponential, logarithmic, absolute value, and step functions. Students will also study complex numbers, matrices, systems of equations, series and sequences, combinatorics, limits, inequalities, conic sections, and analytic and transformational geometry. Emphasis will be placed on applications and the rigorous development of ideas. This rigorous course requires a mastery of Algebra and Geometric skills as well as dedication by the learner. 413104CW MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM Pre-Calculus - Trigonometry Prerequisites: Advanced Algebra and Geometry Credits: 1 Unit Trigonometry will include the study of circular functions and trigonometric functions as well as applications involving trigonometric identities, equations, graphs, and inverses. Vectors, polar coordinates, limits, and differential calculus will also be studied. 413102HW MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM Pre-Calculus - Trigonometry/Honors Prerequisites: Advanced Algebra/Honors and Geometry Honors Credits: 1 Unit Pre-Calculus - Trigonometry/Honors is a rigorous course designed for the student who plans to take Calculus/AP. This course emphasizes critical thinking and problem analysis. This course includes the study of circular functions, inverse trigonometric functions, trigonometric equations and identities, parametric equations, vector applications, the law of sines and the law of cosines. In addition to these topics, students will study polar coordinates as well as techniques of curve sketching, the continued study of limits, and differential calculus. Emphasis will be placed on applications and proof as well as the rigorous development of ideas. 319954CW MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM Calculus 1 Prerequisites: Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry Credits: 1 Unit Calculus 1 includes the study of differential and integral calculus including the study of limits, functions, related rates, maxima and minima, area under a curve, volumes and other applications of the derivative and the integral. This course is designed for a student planning to attend a four-year college or university. 417000AW MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM Prerequisites: Advanced Algebra/Honors and Trigonometry/Honors and a grade of "A" or "B" in all honors math courses prior to Calculus/AP. Credits: 1 Unit Calculus AB/AP is intended for students who have a thorough knowledge of analytic geometry, elementary functions, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. This course will include instruction in differential and integral calculus topics that are typically included in an introductory college calculus course. Topics include related rates, optimization, numerical methods, growth and decay, area under a curve, and volume. Students taking Calculus AB/AP are required to have a graphing calculator and are required to take the Advanced Placement Examination. This course is designed for the student planning to attend a four-year college. 417200AW MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM Prerequisites: Credits: 1 Unit Calculus BC/AP is intended for students who have a thorough knowledge of analytic geometry, elementary functions, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. This course will include instruction in advanced topics involving differential and integral calculus. Other topics include parametric equations, vector equations, graphs in polar coordinates, sequences and series, indeterminate forms, improper integrals, and slope fields. Students taking Calculus BC/AP are required to have a graphing calculator and will be required to take the Advanced Placement Examination. This course is designed for the student planning to attend a four-year college. 417100AW MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM Statistics/AP Prerequisites: Advanced Algebra Credits: 1 Unit Statistics/AP is designed for the student who has a thorough understanding of Advanced Algebra and who is planning to attend a four-year college. This course will include instruction in exploratory analysis, planning and implementing a study, probability, and statistical inference. Students taking Statistics/AP are required to have a graphing calculator with statistical capabilities. Students are required to take the Advanced Placement Examination. |
