TO: ALL STUDENTS FROM: TEACHERS, COUNSELORS,
AND ADMINISTRATORS Choosing the right
career is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. This book is designed to acquaint you with
your options and to guide you in selecting courses and experiences that will
provide you with the foundation you need in order to reach your career
goals. As you choose your subjects
for the next four years, be sure to design a plan that will challenge and
assist your personal and academic growth.
The courses you select will determine how thoroughly you are prepared
for entrance into colleges, occupations, or armed services. We have provided a
group of career clusters or paths that will help you decide which courses to
take. If you plan to attend a
four-year college, you may select college prep, honors, and advanced
placement courses. If you are
planning to attend a two-year college or go straight from high school to the
workplace, you may choose to take tech prep courses. Based on your personal needs and goals,
you may need to select courses from both college prep and tech prep clusters. The tech prep courses
(applied academic courses) in mathematics, science, and communications are
similar in content to traditional college prep courses, but use real-life examples
and emphasize contextual learning.
The course content is rigorous and challenging. Applied academic courses are offered in
mathematics, English, biology, physics, and chemistry. In addition to the
applied academic courses, you are encouraged to enroll at local two- and
four-year colleges while in high school and receive dual credit. Please review courses offered at the
Greenwood County Career Center. These
programs are linked to many specific career opportunities in our community
and can prepare you for direct job entry. As you plan your four
years of high school, you should consider carefully all of the School-to-Work
activities and courses. These
opportunities will give you first-hand experiences and knowledge of
responsibilities and tasks required in the workplace. School-to-Work options are described on
the following pages. Each of you is unique; each of you has personal dreams and plans. If you will set challenging goals, develop your career path carefully, and then work hard each day to develop your potential, you will experience a highly satisfying career and personal life. Please let us and your parents help you explore your curriculum and career options. Working as a team, we can chart your successful pathway that will enable you to meet the demanding challenges of the twenty-first century. |
