369931 French Conversation for the Workplace

Prerequisite:

None

Credit:

1 Elective Unit; this course does not qualify as a unit of foreign language for college admissions or the foreign language unit required for college prep graduates.

 

Description:  French Conversation for the Workplace is designed for students who want to begin to learn French.  This is NOT a college preparatory course.  It includes greetings, directions, weather, shopping, counting, likes and dislikes, identifying people, health, and feelings.  History, geography (including map work), and general culture of the French-speaking world will be incorporated into students’ studies.

Recommended – “C” or better in previous Language Arts or English

Description: French I is designed to help students attain proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing within a minimum period of time and in a way that makes language-learning seem effortless and fun, and to present the language within the context of the contemporary French-speaking world and its culture.  Special emphasis is placed on involving students in the learning of a foreign language as relevant to their own lives and subculture.  The majority of the activities in this program have youth-related themes:  hobbies, travel, schoolwork, dating, choice of career, relationships with parents, and attitudes toward love, friendship, money, success, and failure.  Students will be required to purchase a workbook.

Description:  French II, like French I, strives for student proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing within a minimum period of time.  The guiding principle has been the development of a program that elicits a high level of student participation in the learning process.  Time will be spent strengthening the common foundation along with continuing new vocabulary and structures.  Cultural material is integrated into learning so that students acquire an awareness of the French-speaking world as they read, study structures and complete the activities.  Students are exposed to the geographic, ethnic, and cultural variety of the French-speaking world from Canada to the Caribbean, from Tahiti to Switzerland.  From the use of youth-related themes, a new awareness and a new dimension in studies are stimulated while learning French.  In this course, French is used almost exclusively.  Students will be required to purchase a workbook.

Prerequisite:

Recommended – “C” or better in French II

Description:  French III/Honors is designed to reinforce the skills acquired in the previous courses, but represents a step up in maturity consistent with the capabilities and interests of third-year students.  Reading and writing skills will be stressed with particular emphasis on grammatical structures and vocabulary expansion.  Students will be assigned various reading texts and short stories.  Speaking and comprehension skills are continued as these texts are discussed in class.  Students will be required to purchase a workbook.

French III/Honors

Description:  French IV/Honors is designed to expand the students' understanding of the French language and its culture and to enhance the four basic skills in the target language - listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  Major emphasis will be placed on advanced grammar and composition.  This course will include a basic review of all structures and skills emphasized in French III.  Students will be required to purchase a workbook.

361545 French V/Honors – Advanced Grammar and Composition

Prerequisite:

French IV/Honors

Credit:

Description:  French V/Honors is designed to provide the student with an extensive study of spoken French and to practice listening comprehension and reading skills.  Students will be required to speak only French in class.  Reading selections will come from newspapers, magazines, short stories, fables, and other literary works.  In addition, vocabulary will be studied extensively.  Students will be required to have a French-English dictionary. This course is recommended for students who plan to take French /AP.

French V/Honors

Description:  French /AP is designed to provide a sound basis of linguistic competence especially in the areas of vocabulary development, grammar proficiency, and reading and listening skills.  Within the contexts of various listening activities, students should be able to understand French intonation patterns and complex structures.  Speaking skills will be emphasized, preparing the student to speak accurately and spontaneously.  Students will also practice writing precisely, convincingly, and correctly on topics of general interest.

 

The Advanced Placement Examination is a requirement of this course.

Description:  Spanish Conversation for the Workplace is designed for students who want to learn Spanish well enough to speak it and use it for travel.  This is NOT a college preparatory course.  It includes greetings, directions, weather, shopping, counting, likes and dislikes, identifying people, health, and feelings.  History, map work, and general culture of the Hispanic world will be included.

Description:  Spanish I is designed to help students attain an acceptable degree of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing within the context of the contemporary Spanish-speaking world and its culture.  Included will be brief studies of the geography and people of many of the Spanish-speaking countries.

Recommended – “C” or better in Spanish I

Description:  Spanish II reviews and reinforces the four basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  Its aim is to give students an active, flexible command of Spanish through personal involvement and understanding rather than through set sequences and rote memorization.  Another important goal is to have students realize that the Hispanic Culture in their own country is a reality that directly affects their lives in many ways.

Recommended – “C” or better in Spanish II

Description:  Spanish III/Honors is an advanced course that cements the previous two years of Spanish study.  It takes the basic elements of Spanish I and Spanish II and combines them to produce a more lucid and correct form of grammar, writing, and speech.  Oral language is stressed more than in previous Spanish classes.  Beyond advanced grammar concepts, the literature and culture of Latin America as well as of Spain and the differences and similarities that comprise a Hispanic nation are studied.  Topical events in the news may be the point of class discussion.  Spanish III/Honors serves to mold all that might have been seemingly unrelated information into a workable context for language usage.

Description:  Spanish IV/Honors is designed to expand the students’ understanding of the Spanish language and its culture and to enhance the four basic skills in the target language - listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  Major emphasis will be placed on advanced grammar and composition.  This course will include a basic review of all structures and skills emphasized in Spanish III/Honors.  Students will be required to purchase supplementary materials.
