 BUSINESS CURRICULUM
Four units are required for completer status in the Business Education Cluster.  Students can earn completer status in Accounting, Business Administration, and Computer Technology at the home high school.  Completer status in Office Systems Technology can be earned at the Greenwood County Career Center.

 

Title:

500131 Accounting I

Prerequisite:

None

Credit:

1 Unit

 

Description:  Accounting I is a study of the financial aspects of our business world.  It provides basic skills, values, and attitudes for young people who are interested in entering the field of accounting, computer-related jobs, and various other office positions.  It provides a good base for further study and career advancement in the business world.

 

Some topics covered include starting an accounting system, debit and credit of business transactions, journalizing and posting.  It also covers the six-column worksheet, the income statement, the balance sheet and closing the ledger, posting and closing entries, and special journals.  Workbook and other costs will be required.  Students will also need a pocket calculator for this course.

500531 Accounting II with Computer Applications

Prerequisite:

Accounting I - Grade of "C" or better; keyboarding recommended.

Credit:

1 Unit

 

Description:  Accounting II with Computer Applications helps prepare students for jobs and careers.  It is excellent background and preparation for college business and accounting courses and business majors.  In addition, cost, budgeting, and financial analysis topics are useful tools for entrepreneurship.

 

This course expands on topics learned in the first-year course.  Topics include professional accounting, departmentalized accounting, accounting control systems, general accounting adjustments, corporation accounting, management accounting, cost accounting, not-for-profit accounting, and financial analysis.  Students gain realistic exposure to the business world by working with original source documents in a business simulation.

 

Workbook and other costs are required.

504431 Business and Personal Law

Description:  Business and Personal Law leads students to an understanding of the fundamentals of law in the society of which he/she is already an integral part.  This course relates to an understanding of the “why” and “what” of the law, special laws, contracts, buying and selling of goods, credit, employment, insurance, using commercial paper, and business organization.  The basic principles of law are studied in terms of everyday actions carried out by the student in business and personal dealings.

540032 Business Entrepreneurship

Description:  Business Entrepreneurship provides a general overview of the American free enterprise system.  A study of the various forms of business ownership, internal organization and management functions, as well as financing a business will be covered.  Exploration of planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling a business as related to the entrepreneur will be included.  Instruction in leadership, accounting, as well as microcomputer training may also be included if scheduling allows.

Description:  Computer Technology I students will learn to use business software (word processing, databases, spreadsheets, and graphics) to produce documents, reports, and projects similar to those used in business and industry.

502134 Computer Technology II

Prerequisite:

Grade of "C" or better in Computer Technology I

Credit:

1 Unit

 

Description:  Computer Technology II students will use computers to develop basic skills required for successful computer use in many jobs.  Students will use business software (word processing, databases, spreadsheets, and graphics) to complete advanced projects.  Topics to be covered are networks, telecommunications, data communications, publishing, presentations, and multimedia.

 

This course expands on topics learned in the first-year course.  Advanced study using business software will also be included.

500831 Business Computer Applications I

Prerequisite:

Proficiency in Keyboarding (Touch Method)

Credit:

1 Unit

 

Description:  Business Computer Applications I students will develop skills in keying, formatting and editing letters, memoranda, reports, and announcements.  Students will also learn to use database, spreadsheet, word processing, and graphics applications software in analyzing and solving business-related problems.  Other content areas include components of computer systems and business-oriented problems, manage general office tasks, and demonstrate effective supervisory management and human relations skills.  This course can be used as the computer science course required for graduation beginning with the Class of 2001.

513135 Financial Management

Description:  Financial Management is designed to introduce the student to the basic elements of finance:  budgeting, obtaining credit, maintaining savings and checking accounts, computing payroll, recording business transactions, and applying operations to financial management.  Additional topics to be included are:  preparing tax returns, research of stock investments, and insurance coverage.  The use of computers and tutorial programs will be an integral part of the course instruction.  Computer access is required on a limited basis.

 

Students will need  to have a pocket calculator for classroom use.

503235 International Business and Marketing

Description:  International Business and Marketing is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed for entry-level international business operations, as well as an understanding of the economic and cultural concepts of domestic and international business.  Students will identify continents, countries and cities by using a map or globe, as well as identify communications and customs indicative of the geographical location.  Economic development, importing, exporting, trade relations, and international finance are additional topics for student understanding of international business and marketing.

516035 Word/Information Processing

Prerequisite:

Description:  Word/Information Processing will begin with a review of the keyboard.  An extensive study of Microsoft Word will be done.  The main goals will be to produce documents such as memos, personal and business letters, reports using headers, footers, and page numbers, mail merge documents, outlines, tables, and newspaper-style columns.  Producing documents from rough-draft copy and composing documents while at the keyboard will also be covered.  The correct usage of language skills such as punctuation and spelling will be covered.  Desktop publishing, record management and dissemination, computer and software use, and safety will be covered.  Emphasis will be placed on the student being able to key, proofread carefully, and format mailable documents.

503031 Multimedia and Web Publishing

Keyboarding and Business Computer Applications or Computer Technology

Description:  Multimedia and Web Publishing is designed to provide the student with the knowledge and skills needed for entry-level positions in multimedia and web publishing.  Multimedia combines computer-based text, graphics, audio and video within an interactive environment.  The student will use links and tools to navigate, to interact, to create, and to communicate.

517632 Desktop Publishing

Description:  Desktop Publishing is an expansion of office computing incorporating the use of a microcomputer-based system and software with graphic capabilities to produce publication materials in which typeset text and graphics have been integrated on the page using accepted journalism and presentation techniques.  The major objective of the course is for the student to produce desktop published camera/copy ready masters for reproduction.

Description:  Office Systems Technology I is devised to meet the increasing demand to prepare students for careers in secretarial positions.  The office worker of the future needs the highly developed skills necessary to enter the modern business office.  This program provides a foundation for higher education, as well as the development of employability skills.  The following business courses will be covered:

Description:  Office Systems Technology II will provide students an opportunity to expand on the previous year’s learning.  Many students will have an opportunity to gain actual work experience at an area business or industry through the Cooperative Education Program.  This will provide an opportunity to assume on-the-job responsibilities while still in school.  Students will experience many activities that will enhance their employability skills.  The following business courses will be covered:
