Description: In Art II/Arts and Crafts students will complete an in-depth study of such crafts as weaving, macramé, jewelry, candlemaking, ceramics, basketry, textile design, and photography.

Description: Art I considers the basic concepts and principles of design, art history, art criticism, and art appreciation. Students are exposed to drawing, painting, pottery, printmaking, and two- and three-dimensional design. A weekly sketchbook is required.

Description: Art II is structured to include an in-depth study of the elements and principles of design through studies in design, drawing techniques and composition, painting, color, theory, and sculpture. 357351 Art/AP Art Studio General Portfolio

Description: Art/AP Art Studio General Portfolio enables highly motivated students to complete college-level work in studio art while still in high school. The general portfolio consists of three sections.

Section 1 - Quality consists of four original works.

Section 2 - Concentration is a body of related work based on individual interest in a particular visual concern. It focuses on a process of investigation, growth, and discovery. A maximum of twenty slides and a written commentary must accompany this section.

Section 3 - Breadth contains eight drawings, four color pieces, four works in which the principles of visual organization are the major concepts being displayed, and two sculptures.

Works from each section of the portfolio are in some way related to art history, criticism, and/or art heritage. Students are required to take the Advanced Placement Examination.

Description: In Art/AP Art Studio, Drawing, the drawing portfolio consists of three sections:

Section 1 - Quality consists of six original works.

Section 2 - Concentration requires a written commentary and a maximum of twenty works.

Section 3 - Breadth contains fourteen to twenty works. Section 3 is evidence of the student's ability to work on a wide variety of drawing problems.

Works from each section of the portfolio are in some way related to art history, criticism, and/or art heritage. Students are required to take the Advanced Placement Examination.

Description: Drama I introduces students to the total theater and covers a wide variety of topics, including: theatre history, pantomime, mime, improvisation, costuming, make-up, stagecraft, lighting, and acing. Although performance is important in this class, the emphasis is placed upon the learning process of drama. Drama I is recommended for students who are disciplined and have a genuine interest in the theater.

Description: Drama II will be an extension of Drama I. The emphasis is on both analysis and actor training. Drama II is designed for serious theater students, requiring discipline and careful preparation. Process and performance will be the focus of this class. Students should be prepared to read and analyze many different styles of plays, as well as acting techniques. Directing techniques will be introduced during this course.

Description: Drama III is a sequel to Drama II; however, the emphasis in Drama III will shift from performance to production. Although students will perform, they will assume other responsibilities such as student directing.

Description: Acting/Directing is geared toward serious students who want to explore their full range of acting talents. Students will study several different acting techniques including the Stanislavski method, Lee Strasberg, James-Lange theory and others. Three monologues, duet scenes and short group scenes in different styles will be required. Stage movement, voice, projection, dialects, and stage combat will be studied and practiced. Students will also learn the fundamentals of directing and will be required to direct several of the one- and two-person scenes performed by classmates.

Description: Speech/Debate is recommended for students in grades 10-12 and is made up of the theory and practice of speaking before an audience. The major types of public speaking are studied, with practice in composing and delivering each type. Topics include: verbal, listening and communication skills, speech organization, speech composition, speech presentation, research skills, and fundamentals of debate. Speech/Debate is an excellent course for students interested in a broad range of careers, such as: law, government, teaching, business, sales, and personnel. This course should be of special benefit to students who are insecure and inhibited. A knowledge of current events will benefit students in this course.

Description: Chorus I/Beginning Chorus is planned for students in grades 9-12 interested in singing. The purpose of the course is not to train students to be great singers but to help them gain pleasure through singing, listening to good music, and discussing musical literature. The course is designed to teach the fundamentals of music and the proper use of the voice. Time is devoted to learning new songs from varied choral literature, unison, and two-part harmony.

Description: Freshman Singers is designed for ninth-grade students. Students must audition and be capable of following a musical score with some proficiency. Fundamentals of music, proper singing, and basic repertoire will be studied. Students will perform and will be required to purchase uniforms.

Description: Concert Choir stresses music theory, vocal technique, and sight reading. Music from all periods is studied. Members of this choir will perform and will be required to purchase uniforms.

Description: Mixed Chorus will involve students in grades 9-12 who like to sing and enjoy participating in a group. The music studied will be from many different periods and styles. It is for the pleasure of singing in unison, and in two and three parts. Basic theory will be taught.

Description: Advanced Chorus I will be composed of advanced choral students. This group of students will perform concerts, study advanced repertoire, and participate in competitions. Uniforms will be necessary. Students in this class should also elect to take Advanced Chorus II so that they will be available for performances throughout the entire year. Show Choir, Swing Choir, Madrigals and Handbell Ringers are auditioned from this chorus. A student must be in Advanced Chorus both semesters to participate in these four select auditioned groups. Students will audition for all-state chorus.

Description: Advanced Chorus II will be composed of advanced choral students. These students will participate in festivals, the school musical revue, and represent the school as the performing group. They will direct, accompany, and perform as soloist and in ensembles. Students from this group will audition for all-state chorus.

Description: Advanced Chorus III students will sing Broadway and popular music. They will be involved in choreography, performing, trips, and many outside activities requiring extra rehearsals and performances on their own time. Students from this group will audition for all-state chorus.

Description: The primary goals of Beginning Band are to develop skills, knowledge, and techniques in music at a beginner level. The director will aid every student in finding the appropriate band instrument. Basic skills, theory, and instruction will be experienced in this class.

Description: Intermediate Band is designed for the student who needs more practice and experience in band. Basic music theory and instrumentation will be experienced in this class.

Description: The primary goal of Advanced Band Performance - Marching Band I will be to develop skills, knowledge, and techniques in musical performance both individually and as a group. This course involves the coordination of musical skills with physical movement. Performance and entertainment will be emphasized. This band will represent the school at selected athletic events, band festivals, parades and contests. Students are required to participate in these activities.

This course is taught during the fall semester. Rehearsals begin August 2, 1999. Practices will be held after school hours. Performances and rehearsals will be used to factor grades.

In this course technical skills are developed more fully with emphasis on styles of music. Music literature will be studied for both reading and performing experience. Students who register for this course agree to attend rehearsals and activities deemed necessary by the director.

This course will be offered during the spring semester.

Description: Advanced Band Non-Performance I students will study advanced instrument techniques and knowledge for woodwind, bass, or percussion instruments. This is the perfect course to transfer to another instrument provided the student already has the ability to read musical notes. (If not, students should sign up for Beginner Band.) Solo and ensemble techniques will be used to progress student needs. Performances with the advanced performance group is an option if approved by the band director. No after school activities will be scheduled.

Description: Conducting is designed primarily to teach standard conducting patterns for beat meters. Students will conduct music in class from recordings and live music (players in the group). They will learn how to conduct music while maintaining steady and appropriate temp patterns, dynamic levels, and styles. Students must know how to read music and be familiar with standard instruments in a band or symphonic orchestra.

Description: Music Theory/AP will cover topics that would normally comprise a Freshman Music Theory course in college. The course is intended to serve both as an introductory course for advanced music students (choral or instrumental) as well as a service course for students who are college bound and are seriously interested in the study of music. Topics include basic notation, harmony, styles, and ear training.

This class is designed for students with a musical background who want to further their musical studies. These students will learn how music is structured and will compose music of their own.

The Advanced Placement Examination is a requirement of this course.
